ーーI'll give my take on it:
The two soldiers, one from each side, realized that their war is futile. They should rather coexist in peace. This was explained by Asakusa in previous eps.
The "new" ending, that was shown here instead of the dance, shows the two soldiers surrendering themlsefs to the opposing faction. Before that they tried to convince their allies to stop fighting, but that didn't work.
In my mind they surreneded themselfs to be able to talk directly to the other faction, and maybe be able to confince them like that. Since they both did the same thing, some kind of prisoner exchange could happen. With that in place, they both would be able to show the "truth" of coexistence.
These are my two cents.

What we saw wasn't the actual OVA they made. We saw a cut down version with some highlights we understand, since we had it all explained to us in previous episodes.
They had auditions and a voice cast for the whole thing, that wasn't present in the version we saw.
The message for us as the viewer is rather simple: they manged to produce the full OVA, sold every copy they had and the people liked it.

楽しんだ完成品と同じくらい、席に座ったオレの目を釘付けにしたのは、ズームアウトされた地球だった。この地球はクレーターがたくさんあるみたいだな。この原因は最初は爆弾かなと思ったんだけど、爆弾は地形を破壊してしまうほどのダメージは与えられない。２番目は隕石だけど、こんなクレーターを作るような隕石が落下していたら、地球上の生命体は絶滅していたはずだ。一番筋が通っているのは、急激な海面の上昇だ。これで芝浜町のほとんどが水に沈んでいる説明もつく。
とにかく、この作品についてあまり多くを語ろうというつもりはない。アニメーションに興味がある人にとってはとても楽しくて勉強になる作品だった。間違いなく見る価値のある作品だし、この業界に興味のある人になら誰でもお勧めできる作品だった。２期があることを心から望んでいるよ！映像研の冒険はまだまだ始まったばかりという感じがするね！
ーーI'm glad they ended up changing the ending. The first ending was fine but having two races war against each other then just suddenly have a dance party after coming to an "understanding" was just too cheesy. The new one is definitely much better.
And as much as I enjoyed the finished product, what really made me perk up my seat while watching was that zoomed out view of the Earth. It looks like this version of Earth is full of craters! My first thought were bombs but craters there's just no way bombs can do that kind of terrain damage. Second were meteors but meteors that can create craters like that would've ended life on Earth. The one that would make the most sense is sea levels rapidly rising, which would explain why most of Shibahama is underwater.
Anyway, I really don't have much to say about this show. It was fun and educational especially if you have an interest in animation. Definitely something worth picking up and something that I can easily recommend to anyone who's interested about the industry. Hopefully we get another season! It feels like the adventures of the Eizouken Club is just starting!

うまく言えないけど、浅草があのダンスエンディングは駄目だと言い始めた時、彼女はもっと適切なエンディングを思い付いて、自分たちの衝突するエネルギー(水崎と金森の対抗)から抜け出したように思えた。
