What an episode.
The quotes especially caught my attention regarding how Boogiepop responds to humans. Really really curious to see how the character may change over time in the course of the story.
Also, that OP song is pretty catchy.

The OP was unsurprisingly phenomenal, I mean, it's MYTH & ROID what else would you expect. But that ED was unprecedentedly fire, goddamn.7/10

--The static shots and the rather calm atmosphere of the episode creates the illusion that everything seems to be normal; it is interrupted by the quick shots of the killings but also the shallow reactions of the students about the disappearance of one of their classmates. One might suspect this isn't real at all but it gets more mysterious when the "real" Touka appears on screen.
I'm quite intrigued for the next episode!
Aoi Yuki's voice acting was top notch.

ブギーポップを読んだことがない人たちのために、簡単にFAQ(Frequently Asked Questions = よくある質問)に答えようと思う!

Boogiepop Phantom

Boogiepop Phantom

Boogiepop Phantom

Boogiepop FAQ
Hi, I'm Andrew Cunningham, translator of the Boogiepop novels at Seven Seas. I thought I'd post a quick FAQ to help people new to the Boogiepop series!
What is Boogiepop?
Boogiepop is a light novel series by Kouhei Kadono. There are twenty-two novels in Japan. Six of these are available in English digitally, with a print omnibus that collects the first three. A second print omnibus (with novels 4-6) will be out in February.
Wait, I thought it was called Boogiepop Phantom?
Boogiepop Phantom was the name of an anime from 2000. This was an anime original non-canon storyline and is pretty different from the source material. The word 'Phantom' is not part of any other Boogiepop property.
Should I watch Boogiepop Phantom first?
This new anime is adapting at least the first three novels.
Boogiepop Phantom was a sequel to the first novel, and contained spoilers for the first novel, and for the sixth novel (which is a prequel.) It would make more sense to watch it after reading the novels, or watching this new anime.
I heard Boogiepop was the first light novel?
Yes and no. The term 'light novel' did not exist, but similar products did. At the time, they were mostly novel versions of rpgs -- Slayers, Lodoss, Orphan, etc. Boogiepop was in a very different genre, and was such a huge hit that it inspired a lot of imitators, and people decided they needed a new word for books like these.
You said Boogiepop was really influential?
There was a whole generation of light novel writers who grew up reading these books. You'll see their influence in writers like Ryohgo Narita, Nisio Isin, and in games like the Persona series. Boogiepop itself is heavily influenced by Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, to the point where the author wrote a Jojo novel called Purple Haze Feedback.

Really appreciate your work and hope you can work on the series again.

A confusing start for sure, reminds me a bit of Occultic;Nine if anyone remembers that.
Animation wasn't too good, and the male character was quite boring, but hopefully we'll get more into his character.
What I do find interesting, however, is that I don't believe we hear anyone's thoughts this episode, everything we learn is through dialogue.

Cuz it is. It's slow-paced and kinda went to the backburner in the later years so I'm glad Boogiepop is still popular enough to trend in Japan as soon as the episode aired.

The mysterious tone kept me intrigued, Boogiepop seems to be a kind of guardian who cares for humanity when he is in danger, but his way of manifesting is quite interesting, using a person's body I did not expect, I thought he copied the appearance of the person, but in short quite interesting.
The OP is quite awesome, MYTH & ROID continues to do an incredible job, it was also my pleasure and the ED did not stay behind, it is quite calm, both OP and ED accompany the mysterious plot that this anime has.
I think the following episodes will have more development, I personally felt that this episode was an introduction to future events and leave the mysterious and dark atmosphere that this anime has.

That opening song "shadowgraph" by MYTH&ROID is definitely unique even with the stylish fan service in it. ED theme song is catchy too.
Boogiepop immediately shows up in the opening minutes and I find the character to be very mysterious (although also displaying some human-like behavior) There's themes related to human behavior that I thought are pretty interesting. Seems like a set up episode for the main concept of the show. I think the exploration of human psyche and nature could also make this show a dark horse. Damn right the world is filled with mistakes.
Also found the animation quality to be solid so far with some of the realistic backgrounds.
